It can be cyclical - Sellers market and then buyers etc. I have to be able to switch gears or keep my marketing up to service both. Not just sellers. That is a bit of a challenge.
Companies create disadvantages for agents. Here are examples:
Refin...1% agents where the company takes over 1/2 the agents job and takes 1 1/2%-2% of their commissions.
Compasse Has the unethical practice "our company comes first" (over the fudicicary responsibility of the seller). They enforce that their agents post their listings internally with the company for 1 week before exposing the listing to the market. This violates their fiduciary responsibility to their sellers. (not exposing the sellers property to the entire market means less potential buyers for the seller). Also this seems to be a violation of the MLS (must list within a day or so of signing a listing). This is done to create an "advantage" to Compasse agents so that more will join is my assumption. I am not sure why they can get away with this policy.
Teachers loan programs "Lands". Long time client is a teacher. I spent hundreds of hours helping her find a home. She found out about Lands and they told her that she had to use one of their agents to use the program. Their agent showed 1 house (that I sent her) and took my transaction. Long time client lost because of this "teacher helpful" program.
Zillow and others...Using our information from OUR MLS DATA and OUR HARD WON LISTING! to grow themselves and take over our market share. This is all on top of our own inter-competition among agents. It is a pretty brutal business when you think about it.

Greatest challenge to residential real estate agents will be the ibuyers companies like Open Door, Purple Brick, Zillow. Sellers love the convenience, choose when to close, not doing repairs, not dealing with negotiations, not dealing with another agent...etc, etc. People will give up a percent or so on profit for this. Especially the convenience factor of choosing closing dates and not doing open houses or showings. This is going to hurt agents bad.
